Fodor's Expert Review Restaurante Bazooka's

$ San Isidro de El General Diner

The slogan at this popular roadside diner is "American as apple pie," and there is indeed apple pie à la mode, as well as an all-day breakfast menu with waffles and pancakes and a selection of hearty burgers, triple-decker sandwiches, and meal-size salads. Hungrier eaters can chow down on hearty servings of barbecue ribs or various cuts of steak, accompanied by reasonably priced Spanish wines. There are tico touches, too, with local fish and shrimp with rice and tres leches cake, the classic tico dessert. The $5 lunch specials are an excellent value, and there is free Wi-Fi. Tables are spread through different rooms of the cheerfully updated wooden hacienda, all of them pleasant, with lots of natural light. There is also a shaded terrace if you want to get away from the TVs. If you're in a hurry, everything is available to go. The eatery is on the main highway, so you don't have to negotiate San Isidro de El General's sometimes confusing one-way streets. Just look for the big pink Bazooka's sign at the northern entrance to town.
