A sportfisher's dream lodge, Aguila de Osa has spacious rooms with hardwood interiors, oversize bamboo beds, and luxurious tile-and-glass-brick bathrooms. Stained-glass lamps with tropical themes and hand-carved doors add artistic flair. Be prepared for a steep climb up stone stairs to your room with a view of Drake Bay. Morning coffee arrives outside your room before 6 AM. Dinner here is a real event, with huge platters of perfectly cooked fish—sometimes guests' own catches—and meats, served family-style. The lodge has two 31-foot, high-tech sportfishing boats, as well as dive trips and excursions into Corcovado Park. Two-night packages include transfers from Drake Bay or Palmar Sur airports. Pros: great for fishing enthusiasts; elegant lodge and rooms; convivial, communal dining with wine included. Cons: no ocean views or breezes, and heat and humidity can be stifling; steep climb to some rooms, on sometimes slippery stone stairs; some rooms have little privacy, notably No. 10.

I loved this place. Yes, the climate is so humid that your clothes don't dry, often forcing you to take advantage of their laundry service. And yes, the rooms have no A/C and screens for windows, forcing you in a bit of a "camping" mode. But everyone is so damn friendly. Breakfast, lunch, appetizers and dinner is included, and you eat with all the guests as the staff serves some top notch food. Luis, the lone waiter and bartender while I was there, is friendly and mixes some mean cocktails. It truly is like spending a few days at a Costa Rican's home, to the point where you want to say goodbye to every staff member you met during your stay. As for the adventures, we did some hiking and snorkeling, and afterwards they serve up some lunch. I love this place, and if I ever find myself in Costa Rica I have to visit the Aguila de Oso family again.
