Luna Lodge's ultimate charm lies in its remoteness and tranquility. On a mountaintop overlooking the ocean and the rain forest, it's a true retreat, with a huge hardwood pavilion for practicing yoga or contemplating magnificent sunsets. Just below the yoga platform there's an elegant massage hut with ethereal views. Round bungalows in the garden, spaced apart for privacy, have thatch roofs, garden showers, and decks for bird-watching or relaxing in wood-and-leather rocking chairs. Three deluxe rooms near the main lodge have private baths and share a spacious deck. For real adventure, bed down in one of the lodge's comfortable new platform tents, set on a hilltop with ocean view and private bathrooms. Guided hikes to nearby waterfalls and swimming holes are precipitous and thrilling, and lounging around the beautiful new pebble-deck pool is pure nirvana. Healthful meals have an imaginative vegetarian flair, tempered with servings of fish and chicken spiced with herbs from a hilltop organic garden. Host Lana Wedmore is a model of amiable helpfulness. Pros: scenic setting for peace, yoga, and therapeutic massage; comfortable lodging and healthful food; excellent birding. Cons: extremely steep road up to lodge; beach is quite a hike back down (and up!); no a/c and limited electricity; open cabins mean there may be some encounters of the small wildlife kind.
