With more bird species than the United States and Canada packed into an area about half the size of Kentucky, and an array of landscapes that run the gamut from lowland rain forest to highland páramo, Costa Rica offers nature lovers more interesting stuff than could ever fit in one vacation. The Costa Rican government realized several decades ago that the country's greatest assets were its flora, fauna, and natural beauty, and they set on a course of conservation that has left about a quarter of the national territory in national parks and other protected areas today.
