Some 100 souvenir vendors congregate in a block-long covered walkway on the west side of the Plaza de la Democracia. As you approach, the whole affair looks like a string of metal shacks, but some of the sellers offer bargains in hammocks, wood carvings, and clothing. In a perpetual tug-of-war, the city proposes moving the stalls to a less visible location at Avenida 4 and Calle 7. The vendors balk and the city relents, only to have the dispute come up again a few months later.
