Our first night in San Jose we stayed at the adjacent Gran Hotel and walked right over to purchase a $5 ticket to a "Salsa Opera in 2 parts" that started at 8 pm. This was better than a guided tour because we got to see the theater in use, and it is absolutely stunning.
The Cafe in the National Theater is a great spot to get out of the rain or take a break before the show, with a view of beautiful fresco paitings on the ceiling. Coffee and dessert were reasonably priced.
