Fodor's Review:

The baroque Teatro Nacional is the home of the excellent National Symphony Orchestra, which performs on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings between April and November. The theater also hosts visiting musical groups and dance companies. Tickets are $4-$40.

Our first night in San Jose we stayed at the adjacent Gran Hotel and walked right over to purchase a $5 ticket to a "Salsa Opera in 2 parts" that started at 8 pm. This was better than a guided tour because we got to see the theater in use, and it is absolutely stunning.

The Cafe in the National Theater is a great spot to get out of the rain or take a break before the show, with a view of beautiful fresco paitings on the ceiling. Coffee and dessert were reasonably priced.
