There's nothing common about this luxurious little B&B overlooking coffee farms; you need only step through the front door of the Gaudí-esque main building to marvel at its soaring ceiling, white-stucco arches, and polished wood. Each guest room is different, but all have original art, local hardwoods, and colorful fabrics. The spacious two-story suite is out of a fairy tale, with a spiral staircase leading up to a window-lined tower bedroom. On the grounds, which are planted with tropical flowers and shaded by massive fig trees, are two two-bedroom villas. The owners work very hard to make the hotel as eco-friendly as possible, using composting, solar panels, and other methods—the hotel is one of only two in the country to receive a top rating for sustainable tourism. Four-course dinners are available.

I stayed at Finca Rosa Blanca because I went to San Jose for serious medical treatment. I have extreme allergies to many chemicals and the staff assured me that everything they use for building, cleaning and foods is as natural or as organic as possible. They went so far as to email me ingredients lists for their cleaners, and to clean the room with vinegar for my arrival. When I got there, it was perfect. As but one of many examples of the extraordinary treatment I received, the chef, Pedro, called his mother in San Salvador to get a recipe for pancakes that I could eat despite my food allergies. Everyone treated me with kindness, friendliness and exquisite care. I was pampered! The hotel is gorgeous. The pool is non-toxic and fabulous. The food and service are excellent. It could not have been better.
