One of Jacó's best restaurants—and by far its most expensive—El Hicaco is known for serving copious servings of seafood. The house specialty is lobster, but the kitchen also offers fresh mahimahi, sea bass, tuna, shrimp, and other fruits of the sea with seasonings ranging from a teriyaki glaze to a papaya-ginger sauce. Seating is in a simple but elegant open-air dining room or on a gravel patio near the beach. Wednesday night brings a sumptuous buffet known as the "lobster feast," with lobster and other seafood cooked to order, an open bar, and a calypso band ($65).

I went to Costa Rica with my family to celebrate my father's 60th birthday. We ate at El Hicaco our first night there and it was the perfect way to start our vacation. The food was excellent and it was exactly what I would have expected for Costa Rican dining. I highly recommend the ceviche!
