Owned by the Smith brothers, whose family was among the first American arrivals in the 1950s, these steep-roof chalets have large bedrooms with white-stucco walls, wood floors, and huge windows. Some have views of the wooded grounds; others, of the far-off Gulf of Nicoya. The most innovatively designed of Monteverde's hotels is also one of the closest to the reserve entrance. Both restaurants ($$) prepare local and international recipes with flair, served indoors or on the veranda.
