This friendly and spirited hotel has a colorful, Spanish-style main building, a bar dedicated to Marilyn Monroe, and tropical gardens. Deluxe rooms, on a hill with a view of three volcanoes, are spacious, with bamboo furniture. Smaller rooms have terra-cotta tile floors and Guatemalan fabrics; those on the garden side are quieter, and worth the extra $10. A sumptuous breakfast buffet is served on the bar's patio. The restaurant's ($-$$) eclectic selection ranges from Costa Rican casados (plates of rice, beans, fried plantains, salad, and meat, chicken, or fish) to unusual dishes, like fish in a shrimp-and-corn sauce. The over-the-top presentation (ceviche served in a half-coconut adorned with plantains, for one) has to be seen to be believed, and it tastes as good as it looks.
