The tranquil and colorful Xandari is a strikingly original inn and spa. Its bold design is the brainchild of a talented couple—he's an architect, she's an artist. Contemporary pueblo-esque villas along a ridge overlooking Alajuela and San José are spacious, with plenty of windows, colorful paintings, large terraces, and secluded lanais (sunbathing patios). It's the kind of place that makes you want to take pictures of your hotel room. Some villas stand alone and some share a building, but nearly all of them have spectacular views. So does the restaurant, which serves tasty, often organic, low-fat food. A 4-km (3-mi) trail through the hotel's forest reserve winds past five waterfalls.

We recently spent 1 week at both Xandari's for my husband's 60th birthday and it was perfect! Both properties are AMAZING and I cannot imagine ever staying anywhere else if visiting CR. Shannon Farley (manager) Xandari by the Pacific went above and beyond giving us a ride in her car to go horsebackriding when there was a mixup on picking us up. Both Xandari's arranged all of our tours w/drivers. We went to Paos Volcano & La Paz Waterfalls near San Jose (both highly recommended). We did the Waterfall Canopy Tour,(actually my husband did and I walked along the trail both directions - He loved it and the guides were terrific.) We also went on the Isla Damas Estuary Tour, Tarcoles River Crocodile Tour, Planet Dolphin whale watching & snorkeling Tour, as well as horseback riding up into the hills and back down to the beach. All arranged through the Xandari and all very highly recommended. The package Xandari's offer for a week include a dinner at both locations as well as a jacuzzi for 2 overlooking the valley (with wine) and a massage for both my husband and myself as well as transfers to and from the airport as well as to and from both properties. We stayed at the top of the line rooms and were not disappointed. We had our own plunge pool and view of the ocean. The Xandari Resort & Spa has beautiful landscaping and wonderful trails on 40 acres (though the one to the tallest waterfall is quite steep.) The owners, Sherrill & Charlene Broudy could not be nicer. He is the architect for these beautiful properties and she is an amazing and prolific artist. (BE SURE TO VISIT THEIR WEBSITE TO SEE FOR YOURSELF AT www.xandari.com) This is a long review but I cannot stress enough that if you are going to Costa Rica for a week you should do your touring from the Xandari's. We have traveled extensively around the world and this is a highlight among many. You won't be sorry and it is worth every penny you spend!
