The small town of Potrero is a classic Tico community, with a church, school, and supermarket arranged around a soccer field. But Potrero Beach stretches for 4 km (2½ mi) all the way south from the village to the skyline of Flamingo. Development is picking up speed, with large houses and condominium developments springing up on any hill with a view. There's a large Italian contingent here, adding some style and flavor to area hotels. There are also some affordable, self-catering resorts, where you can set yourself up comfortably for a week or more. The brown-sand beach is safe for swimming, and the quietest stretch is midway between Flamingo and Potrero town. The best beach view and best breeze are from a bar stool at Bar Las Brisas. About 10 km (6 mi) offshore lie the Catalina Islands, a barrier-island mecca for divers and snorkelers.
