At the park's northern end, palm-fringed Playa Uvita stretches out along a tombolo, or long swath of sand, connecting a former island to the coast. At low tide the brown sandbar resembles a whale's tail, hence the name of the bay: Bahía Ballena, or Whale Bay. This is the best place to enter the park, since it only costs $1 and there are restrooms and lots of restaurants nearby. The other entrance at Playa Ballena, staffed by park rangers, costs $6.
