Haute cuisine is not what you'd expect in Puerto Jiménez, but New York chef Barbara Burckhardt has set a whole new standard at her elegantly arcaded terrace restaurant. Already famous for her ice creams and sorbets, Barbara has scoured the country to find the finest goat cheese, the best smoked trout, and the freshest herbs, and solicited local fishermen to deliver just-caught seafood, to create outstanding dinners as well. The menu changes daily, but you can count on such imaginative dishes as grilled loin pork chop with a coriander, cumin, orange, and black-peppercorn rub, and succulent coconut and macadamia-fried shrimp. Italian and French wines are reasonably priced ($16-$30). For dessert, the coconut and dulce de leche macadamia-nut pie with chocolate sauce is a hit.
