About a kilometer (½ mi) south after the entrance to Tárcoles, the Costanera passes a small beach called Playa La Pita, which provides your first glimpse of the Pacific if you're coming down from the Central Valley. The beach is rocky, and its proximity to the Tárcoles River makes the water murky and unfit for swimming, but it's a nice spot to stop and admire the ocean. From here the road heads inland again, and you'll come across the entrance to Punta Leona, a vast hotel and residential complex. The road then winds its way up a steep hill, atop which is the entrance to the luxury hotel Villas Caletas. On the other side of that ridge is the bay and beach of Herradura.
