Considering the amount of coffee you'll drive past in the Central Valley, you might want to devote an hour or so of your vacation to learning about the crop's production. Doka Estate, a working coffee plantation for more than 70 years, offers a comprehensive tour that takes you through the fields, shows you how the fruit is processed and the beans are dried, and lets you sample the local brew. The best time to take this tour is during the October-to-February picking season.

Cost: $16, $30 with transportation from San José, Alajuela, Heredia, Escazú, or San Antonio
Open: Tours daily at 9, 10, 11, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30; weekends last tour at 2:30

We booked our Doka Coffee tour through the Peace Lodge and really enjoyed it. We began by sampling different coffees and seeing which we liked best. Then we went to see seedlings in development. After that, we strolled through the grounds which were beautiful, green, and lush. We even got to pick a couple of coffee beans. The tour also includes seeing the drying, roasting, and packaging facilities. There's a nice little gift shop at the end of the tour where you can make coffee purchases. I'd recommend this tour for anyone who wants to spend a beautiful day outside and learn a little more about where coffee comes from.
