To the north of the Parque Central stands a strange, decorative tower called the Fortín (Little Fort), which was built as a military post in the 1880s by the local oligarch Fadrique Gutiérrez. It never did see action, and now serves as a symbol of the province. It's worth a walk by, but is closed to the public. The old brick building next to the Fortín is the Palacio Municipal (Town Hall).
