Former president Oscar Arias won the 1987 Nobel peace prize for his tireless efforts to bring reconciliation to a war-torn Central America, and today he remains a vocal force for international peace and social justice. His Arias Foundation operates this museum, with bilingual exhibits documenting the isthmus's turbulent history and promoting the cause for peace. Messages from other Nobel laureates—the Dalai Lama, Lech Walesa, Rigoberta Menchú, Jimmy Carter, and Henry Kissinger among them—adorn one room. Begin your visit in the auditorium watching a 12-minute video in English, The Dividends of Peace. There's also an hour-long video that delves into the topic. The museum usually does not appear to be open when you walk by. Knock on the gate or, better yet, call and let the attendant know you're coming.
