Geographically and atmospherically separate from Tamarindo, this relatively undeveloped beach's main claim to fame is surfing. As you bump along the very rough beach road, most of the cars you pass have surfboards tied on top. But Tamarindo escapees are slowly encroaching, building private houses and a smattering of new hotels. The beach is a beautiful 1-km (½-mi) stretch of pale-gold sand with rocky outcroppings, a river mouth, a mangrove swamp, and a very big pig named Lola, who likes to cool off in the surf. Unfortunately, security here has become an issue; posted signs warn visitors not to leave anything of value in parked cars or unattended on the beach.
