Seekers of tranquillity need look no farther than Junquillal (pronounced hoon-key-yall). To the south of Playa Negra, this long swath of picturesque beach stretches about 3 km (2 mi), with only one old, wooden hotel in sight. A surprisingly cosmopolitan mélange of restaurants—Peruvian, German, Italian, Swiss—adds an international flavor. Away from the beach, Junquillal is definitely getting livelier. There's finally a small supermarket in the village with a public Internet connection. Although it qualifies as a Blue Flag beach, the surf here is a little strong, so watch children carefully. There's a kids' playground right at the beach. If you're child-free, it's also a perfect beach for taking long, romantic strolls.
