In a lush valley 7 km (4½ mi) northeast of San Isidro, the community-managed Las Quebradas Biological Center is a centro biológico (nature reserve) that protects 1,853 acres of dense forest in which elegant tree ferns grow in the shadows of massive trees, and colorful tanagers and euphonias flit about the foliage. A 3-km (2-mi) trail winds through the forest and along the Río Quebradas, which supplies water to San Isidro and surrounding communities.
