Fincas Naturales, a former plantation, has been reforested to allow native trees to spring back and not-so-native trees, like teak, to take root next to them. A footpath winds through part of the 30-acre tropical forest, and naturalist guides do a good job of ecological instruction and identifying birds. The reserve is home to three kinds of monkeys, as well as iguanas, motmots, toucans, tanagers, and seed-chomping rodents called agoutis. Guided walks are given throughout the day: the first starts at 6:30 AM for bird-watching, and the last is a nighttime jungle trek that departs at 5:30 PM. Unfortunately, you can't explore the reserve at your own pace; only the Butterfly Botanical Garden can be seen without a guide.

The butterfly garden is one of the best around. The reptiles are massive and cool. We really enjoyed a few hours roaming and learning.
