On a ridge south of town, this wooden lodge is named for a chunk of wood that resembles a pelican -- one of dozens of idiosyncratic wooden sculptures carved out of tree roots by owner Rafael Elizondo. Above the restaurant, which has a gorgeous view of the valley below San Gerardo, are economical small rooms with shared bath. There are also two private wooden cabins with kitchenettes near the pool. The owners can arrange everything for a climb up Chirripó. The climb to the hotel itself is quite steep and requires a 4WD.
