At the city's nucleus, this simple tree-planted square—it's more a plaza than a park—has a gurgling fountain and concrete benches, and a life-size bronze statue of a street sweeper cleaning up some bronze litter. In the center of the park is a spiderlike, ochre-color gazebo donated by former Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza. Several years ago a referendum was held to decide whether to demolish the despot's gift, but Ticos voted to preserve the bandstand for posterity.
