Playa Nosara

Surfing

If you ever wanted to learn to surf, Nosara is the place. Guiones is the perfect beginners' beach, with no rocks to worry about. Local surf instructors say that the waves here are so consistent that there's no week throughout the year when you won't be able to surf. In March and April, the Costa Rican National Surf Circuit comes here for surf trials.

Coconut Harry's Surf Shop. This Nosara surfing institution on the main road has boards ($15 to $20 per day), gear, and lessons ($45 for 1½ hours, board included, for a group of three; a private lesson is $60). The shop also has a beach location 100 meters (328 feet) from the main Playa Guiones beach entrance, where surfers can also store their boards. Corky Carroll's Surf School. Run by a renowned, veteran American surfer, this school has its own hotel for surfing students, with prebooked lodging and lessons packages only; no walk-ins. Nosara Surf Shop. This large surf shop offers group lessons ($40 per hour), and rents boards by the day ($10 to $15) and has lots of gear for sale, too. Have a credit card handy to pay a deposit on the rental board.
