Playa Flamingo

One of the first northern beaches to experience the wonders of overdevelopment—a fact immortalized in the concrete towers that straggle up the hill above the bay—Flamingo still has some hidden charms. It's perhaps most famous for its large sportfishing fleet, though they've been moored out in the bay for more than eight years now waiting for the government to grant a new concession

to update and operate the marina here. Working girls are lured to Flamingo by the boatloads of single-for-the-week fishermen. This adds a faintly salacious whiff to some local nightspots. In recent years, the area has become increasingly popular with the gay and lesbian community, especially at inviting properties like Flamingo Beach Resort.
