Fodor's Review

This monastery-themed formal restaurant high in the San Rafael hills has a great view of the Central Valley. The dining room is dressed up in antiques, with tables set for a five-course meal; waiters don short friar tunics over their standard black pants and white shirts, which makes the atmosphere too theatrical for some tastes, but the classic French dishes are outstanding. The more casual Cava Grill dining area serves platters of grilled meat. La Cava Bar, beneath the

dining room, has tasty appetizers, and live music Thursday to Saturday, and is open into the wee hours.

we dined in the La Cava this past Feb 14th. it seemed to us that since we were Americans and not locals we had poor service. In the 2 hours we spent there our waiter never ask us if we wanted a drink and never offered us coffee. other than to bring us our appetizer and main meal he was invisable. my fiancee had to track him down twice and practically beg for our check.oh, by the way was $100.00 ,tip was included. thank goodness this was the only bad

dining experience we had in costa rica. bonnie

Only Thing Missing Is The Pope

A must visit place when you come to Costa Rica. High on a mountain top with a great view of the valley. Food very good, atmosphere very good and the service is very good also. Prices could be better but all in all it is worth it.

Great Table-Side Cooking!

Great meal here. The (male) staff have made a career out of waiting tables, and it shows. Service was impeccable. Lots of dishes prepared tableside. The steak tartare was amazing (huge portions), as was the Caesar salad, steak au poivre, flambeed desserts. We dined on a Friday night, and it seemed to be the most popular place in town. Lots of young ticos goind to the Cava downstairs for food, music, and fun. Much more formal upstairs in the main dining

areas with the view. My only complaint was that it smelled a bit musty--like my grandmother's attic. Highly recommend!
