AltaHotel Review

The view from this hotel perched on a hillside above Santa Ana is impressive, but so is the building itself with its colonial and modern style—think archways, hardwoods, and leather. Guest rooms are spacious, with hand-crafted furniture and bathrooms with hand-painted tiles; ask for one on the fourth or fifth floor to take advantage of the view. The restaurant, La Luz ($$$), has plenty of windows for admiring the distant hills and the pool and gardens below. The eclectic and unusual menu includes rack of lamb with organic coffee sauce and Caribbean-style sea bass with coconut-milk sauce.

    Alta Review

I stayed a night here January 2012 and after Costa Rica Expeditions, this was a real let-down. The view was nice and there were screen doors onto the balcony. Otherwise, we had to call three or four times to get light bulbs replaced, the bathroom was not particularly clean, and at La Luz, the music was rather loud, piped in Simon & Garfunkel/James Taylor/etc. and the food was so-so. The one nice thing was before we left for the airport I asked the restaurant to make me a chicken sandwich and that was nicely done. There is a wildlife refuge up the road which we enjoyed visiting, but otherwise, hard to walk anywhere.
