A favorite with young couples and families, the friendly Orquideas proves that affordable does not have to equal generic—from a classy Spanish-style main building to a bar dedicated to Marilyn Monroe, this place has style. Deluxe rooms, on a hill with a view of three volcanoes, are spacious, with bamboo furniture, but can smell a bit musty. Smaller rooms have terra-cotta tile floors and Guatemalan fabrics that have seen better days; those on the garden side are quieter, and worth the extra $10. The distinctive member of the accommodation mix here is a two-bedroom geodesic dome, set off in the garden and perfect for families or groups. A sumptuous breakfast buffet is served on the bar's patio. The restaurant's ($$) eclectic selection ranges from straightforward Costa Rican cuisine to fun presentations (ceviche served in a half coconut, for one) that have to be seen (and tasted) to be fully appreciated. Orquideas is a favorite among posters to Fodors.com.

The room was plenty spacious and comfortable. The service was very accomodating, the place was very relaxing. And, it's very convenient---there's a great restaurant there with a wide variety of offerings, and it's a great launching point for Poas/La Paz and for Grecia/Sarchi/Arenal. And, it's close to the airport.
