Fodor's Review

About ½ km (¼ mile) south of town, this charming, small hotel with a spectacular sea view sits on a grassy lawn between the rocky shoreline and the entrance to Montezuma's famous waterfall hike. The place has a peaceful atmosphere—you can cool off in a natural tidal pool at low tide or lounge about in one of the palm-shaded hammocks. The intimate terrace restaurant, open to the public, serves excellent homemade breakfasts (not included in rate), as well as lunch and

dinner, with a focus on organic foods. Wood-panel rooms are rustic and small, but comfortable; second-floor rooms have more windows. All rooms have private bathrooms. The two-story oceanfront houses next door have four bedrooms, making them great for larger groups.

Location, Location, Location!!!

Isn't that what they say in real estate? Well this place has it. Just a short walk from town and what a location. Amor de Mar is a beautiful small hotel with a grass headland on a rocky point. Imagine yourself on your 2nd-floor porch, delicious fruit smoothie in hand, looking out at the pelicans flying up the coast to Cabo Blanco, waves crashing, birds calling, and hammocks swingings -- all within 10 minutes of funky and beautiful Montezuma.

I should point out that Amor de Mar has no pool (contrary to what Fodors might lead you to believe). What it does have is a HUGH tidepool which functions as a swimming pool when the tide is right -- one of my favorite "pools" in Costa Rica. I only have 2 comments on the minus side - they should really change the towels daily, given the heat and humidity in this area and the staff could have been more helpful when we needed a ride into town with our luggage to catch the boat to Jaco. (They offered to call us a $20 cab to take us 1 km. to town - El Sano Banano gave us a ride for free!) Otherwise, a splendid little hotel in a fabulous location.
