Fodor's Review

Centered on the scenic sweep of placid Bahía Tambor with its warm, shallow water, intimate Tambor Tropical offers "beds with a view" in spacious suites, along with sportfishing, horseback riding, bird-watching, and just lolling in a hammock by the pretty, blue-tile pool. Attractive two-story houses, with up and down suites equipped with kitchens, are entirely built and furnished with varnished, tropical hard woods: floors, ceilings, walls, and even toilet seats. Large

front windows provide panoramas of the sea and surrounding gardens—slightly pricier second-floor rooms have the best views—and platform beds really do enable sunrise views. Most rooms have air-conditioning, but sea breezes and ceiling fans keep rooms cool. Carefully prepared meals are served poolside or in the thatch-covered dining room during the rainy months. Paddleboards and kayaks get you out onto the water, and bird-watchers can comb nearby trails with a guide, in search of about 175 species. No children under 16.

Great Place to Relax

The suites are wonderful and the woodwork is incredible. We were able to enjoy watching the sunrise from our bed as we had such a great view. All of the suites have a large deck area with chairs etc for enjoying the view of the beach and the gardens. The hotel is great for a relaxing few days to get away from it all. The beach wasn't the best feature but the pool area was nice. There were also a number of activities available, we enjoyed a horse

ride in the surrounding area.

Relaxing and romantic retreat

I can't say enough about how beautiful the Tambor Tropical resort is. Everything is hand made exotic wood by local carpenters and a guy from Oregon who relocated to Tambor. We stayed in one of the upstairs villas, with a huge vaulted hexagonal ceiling, bar, and beautiful deck. Well worth the extra money. Aside from the sounds of power tools a couple of days as they were refinishing one of the villas, it was a wonderfully relaxing and refreshing 7

days. The tour packages offered were so much fun and we were very very impressed by the local tour guides in Tambor. We picked up some food at the local supermarket and cooked dinner for ourselves a couple of nights, just for fun. I'm not sure which of the local ingredients it was, but we made the best spaghetti we'd ever eaten in our lives on the little cooktop in our room. The swimming pool is beautiful, and the outdoor bar is the best in town. The people of Costa Rica (Ticos) do not as a rule have fancy houses, perfect lawns, or shiny new cars, and the town of Tambor is no different. But we loved walking through town, watching the local children playing soccer on the beach, and seeing how many chickens we could count running around. If you're looking to stay somewhere and spend all your time on the beach, Tambor Tropical is not for you. In fact, Playa Tambor probably isn't either. The beach is clean but nowhere near as nice as the one at Tango Mar or on Tortuga Island. If you're looking for quiet romance and a place to get away from the stress of life, Tambor Tropical is definitely the place for you. We walked by Playa Tambor along the beach, and not only was it really crowded, but there was loud music playing too. We ate lunch at Tango Mar - it has a way nicer beach, but the villas weren't as nice, and the guys working behind the front desk were not what I would call "people" persons. I for one loved the absence of a TV in our villa.

Different way of life at Tambor Tropical

Tambor Tropical is the place to go for extemely warm hosts, good food & drinks, gorgeous and comfortable suites and surroundings, fun activities (and a pretty pool to relax by afterwards), and true rejuvination & relaxation. Don't go here if you're looking for club-hopping, people-watching, or a white-sand beach with a cabana boy to spray Evian Face Mist on you.
