Fincas Naturales

Fincas Naturales Review

Fincas Naturales, a former teak plantation, has been reforested to allow native trees to spring back among the not-so-native ones. A footpath winds through part of the 30-acre tropical forest, and naturalist guides do a good job of explaining the local ecology and identifying birds. The reserve is home to three kinds of monkeys, as well as iguanas, motmots, toucans, tanagers, and seed-chomping rodents called agoutis. Guided walks are given throughout the day: the first starts at 6:30 am for bird-watching, then at 9 am and 1 pm, plus a nighttime jungle trek that departs at 5:30 pm. The quickest and least expensive tour is an hourly walk through displays on butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians. Unfortunately, you can't explore the reserve at your own pace.

The butterfly garden is one of the best around. The reptiles are massive and cool. We really enjoyed a few hours roaming and learning.
