Fodor's Review

If you've graduated from your backpacker days and are a bit more flush with cash but still want to be near the action, this old standby on a quiet street a couple of blocks from the center of town is ideal. The comfortable cabinas are decorated with an interesting variety of touches such as shell mobiles, watercolor frescoes, and indigenous tapestries. Overall, rooms at this Swiss-run lodging have a neat-as-a-pin quality. Exotic birds flutter constantly through the lush

plantings that screen the cabinas from the street. The place is immensely popular, since the price is low and it's clean and well run; reserve well in advance. You'll receive a small discount if you pay in cash.

Diamond in the Rough

Wow, this was a great place. We went to Puerto Viejo without a reservation, and followed the sign down a side street to this hotel. The mosaics around the property are incredible and the grounds are beautiful. The pool is VERY nice and the rooms are clean and nicely decorated. The staff is not overly friendly, but very helpful. We fell in love with this place and the town. It's worth the horrible drive to spend some time here. They don't have

air conditioning, but we really didn't need it. We had a private room and bath and all the rooms seem to be cabana style. They have a nice restaurant and gift shop also. Great place for the money!
