Fodor's Expert Review Mawamba Lodge
½ km (¼ mile) north of Tortuguero on ocean side of canal, Tortuguero, Limón, 70205, Costa Rica
Nestled between the river and the ocean, Mawamba is the perfect place to kick back and relax, and it is also the only jungle lodge within walking distance (about 10 minutes) of town. Packages include transportation from San José: when you arrive at the river town of Matina, you're whisked into a launch for a 2½-hour ride to the 15-acre site featuring comfortable (hot water!) rustic cabinas with bright colors and garden views. Meals are taken in the spacious dining room, and are included in the price, along with guided tours of the jungle and canal; trips to turtle-heavy beaches cost $40 extra. For a romantic evening, reserve a table on the floating platform on the lagoon.
