Casa Batsú

Hwy. 606, 1½ km (1 mile) south of Santa Elena, 100 m northeast from El Tubu Gas Station, Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

This charmingly modest B&B is owned and operated by a lovely Costa Rican family that takes pride in every detail, from the homemade breakfasts and manicured gardens to the spotless rooms and warm hospitality. All three rooms open onto a covered patio and lounge area where guests are welcomed with a glass of wine upon arrival, and fresh coffee every morning (from the family's own coffee plantation). The spacious accommodations have stone bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, blackout curtains, Wi-Fi, and lounge areas draped with hammocks. Fixed four-course dinners with wine are convenient on rainy nights, and the hearty breakfasts covering the spectrum from mango crepes to chicken burritos cater to early birds. Situated on 400 acres of farmland, the property is backed by a network of trails perfect for a morning hike or a sunset horseback ride (available for $40 for two hours).
