This collection of three-bedroom, three-bath condos is among the most upmarket accommodation choices on the Southern Coast. All villas have exactly the same floor plans and furnishings, but units 1 and 9 are directly on the beach, and the others have sea views. The units, with hardwood and natural stone floors and custom-made cedar and mahogany furniture, can be reserved as a complete villa, or choose a single bedroom or two-bedroom suite. The bedrooms have vaulted ceilings with exposed beams and four-poster king beds. You can dine at nearby resorts or have a cook prepare a private meal for you at the condo. Some units have a five-day minimum stay. The same developer also owns Hopkins Bay, a condo colony at the north end of Hopkins village with similar accommodations at similar prices. Pros: Deluxe condo apartments, units can be combined and configured to meet your needs. Cons: No on-site restaurant, don't expect the same kind of hands-on management as at a small inn.

Our family of five spend a whole week at one of villas at Hopkins Bay at the end of February. We were very impressed with quality and comfort of the accommodation. Each villa has three en-suite large bedrooms which all have views of the ocean. Even though we were not in a sea front villa, the views were magnificent and we could hear the waves and had the ocean breeze coming through the villa.

The villas also have outstanding living areas with a granite kitchen. The bathrooms have a very Caribbean feel with beautifully painted sinks and lively tile colors. Overall the accommodation was exceptional.

When we got to the resort, we were greeted by the concierge who introduced us to the various aspects of the villa and the community. Both the Hopkins Bay resort and its sister resort (Belizean Dreams) have nice restaurants with very friendly staff (indeed both resorts have very friendly staff- the maids, the gardeners, etc. All greeted us with a hello whenever we passed them by). The meals at both restaurants are very good to excellent. There are several restaurants (including mom-and-pop ones) within the village where the food is excellent. We particularly enjoyed the rum-banana-ice cream at the North Beach Restaurant.

This is not a very commercial or touristy area and therefore it is an ideal and quiet setting for rest and relaxation and for spending quality time with family and friends. You will also get to see the local Grifuna people and their culture at close. They are very friendly folks and the village is very safe. We took walks and bike rides in the village and the beach and felt extremely safe. I do not know how long this tranquility and non-commercial nature of the area will last but we intend to go back to experience it again soon.

We enjoyed day trips to the Blue Hole, Maya ruins, Placencia and visiting one of the islands (Thatched Caye). Since Belize has not become a commercialized tourist area, it tends to be a bit on the expensive side when you compare it to the mass tourist locations. However, it is worth every penny or dollar to visit- and revisit. We intend to go back to Hopkins Bay resort as soon as we can.
