Fodor's Review:

Wings painted on posts in the gardenlike grounds signal that you've arrived at Mariposa (Spanish for "butterfly"). The ground floor of this beachfront home has a brace of suites, each with a queen bed and kitchen. Pamela Braun, a Belize-based American artist, painted the Mayan decorations on the walls. Out back is a small cottage, and on the 175-foot beach are thatch palapas with hammocks for lounging. Pros: Opposite of a big resort, a home away from home. Con: Restaurants and bars are a short taxi ride away.

What a treasure. We were welcomed at the airport by one of the owners Marcia Fox, and then taken to Mariposa Beach just a few minutes away. What a lovely property, you first go down the driveway that is just incredible. There are several wonderful varieties of flowers, and trees. And then you come upon a small cottage and the main house that has private ground floor guest quarters. We stayed in the quaint cottage that has a sitting room, separate bedroom, bathroom, full kitchen and a screened in dining area. We were official welcomed with a cold drink and a friendly welcomes from Marcias husband Peter and their staff. Then shown to our cottage and were just delighted. It was just wonderful Peter make delightful fresh bread and you arrive with a refrigerator stock with some item so you can whip something up. We got settled in, and then shown some of the grounds and the beach where there are some palapas with hammocks to relax on. While we were here we wanted to go on some excursion so Marcia set them up and made sure that we got on our way and that we had a good time. It was hard leaving when our stay there was up. I must say that we continued our trip to a typical resort and were very disappoint after the gracious hospitality we received at the Mariposa. As you know a trip starts long before you leave home. I had e-mail Marcia to see if there were any accommodations available for us. I received a response in a timely matter. I then called and talked to Marcia and finalized our plans. While on the phone Marcia volunteered to make flight arrangements from the international airport in Belize to Placencia and also to our other destination while in Belize. I was a little hesitant at first I prefer doing this myself being a travel agent. I decided to let Marcia do this as she seemed very capable.
