Hickatee Cottages Review
A charming and enthusiastic young British couple, Ian and Kate Morton, opened this delightful small lodge at the edge of PG in 2005, with lovely Caribbean-style cottages with zinc roofs and private verandas, nestled in lush foliage. They're beautifully outfitted with locally made furniture and hardwood floors, and with bedspreads and curtains handmade by Kate. Bikes are complimentary, and delicious meals made with fruits and vegetables from the owners' organic nurseries next door are available. Dinner (available nightly except Wednesday and Saturday) is BZ$40; a continental breakfast including fresh homemade rolls and breads is included, and a full-cooked breakfast is BZ$15. Morning tea or coffee (grown and roasted in Toledo) is delivered to your room. There's a small splash pool and a botanical garden and nature area. The lodge owners are involved in scientific programs monitoring the local howler monkey and bat populations. Garífuna drumming lessons are offered once a week. A special treat: once a week (at this writing, on Wednesday) you can go with Ian to visit the nearby Fallen Stones butterfly farm, which he manages. Fallen Stones is one of the largest commercial butterfly operations in Central America, and closed to the public, except for guests of Hickatee. The Mortons can help arrange tours and trips.
