By Bus in The Cayo

Although the largest bus line in the country, Novelo's, shut down in 2005, a number of bus lines have taken its place, and once again there is frequent service—about once every half hour during daylight and early evening hours—between Belize City and the Cayo. National Transportation is the successor company to Novelo's and uses its old terminals, but there are several smaller lines that operate on the Western Highway routes, including T-Line, BZ Bus (a drivers' co-op), Tillet's, and others. Cost between Belize City and San Ignacio is about BZ$6 on a local, and BZ$8 on an express. Buses are typically old U.S. school buses and are not air-conditioned. Except for National Transportation Services (usually called National Transport), some of the smaller bus companies do not have regular offices or bus terminals. Ask locally about where to catch buses, or simply flag down the next bus you see.
