New in late 2007, Caballo Blanco (it is named after a white horse belonging to the former owner of the land, and the horse has remained on the property) is a small eco-lodge. There are six rooms with tile floors, decorated with Guatemalan fabrics, in three duplex thatch cabañas. The main lodge building evokes the style of a 19th-century hacienda. A knoll-top location provides lovely views of San Ignacio and the hills beyond, and at night the meadow below the lodge comes alive with thousands of flickering fireflies. Delicious dinners (BZ$36) are served in a small dining room, but there is no bar. The lodge is home to Casa Avian Support Alliance (CASA), a "rehab center" for birds recovering from injury, illness, and captivity, and the lodge's 23 acres are a bird sanctuary.Pros: Beautiful hilltop views, comfortable new accommodations, friendly staff. Cons: Roadside location means some noise; owners aren't in residence full-time.
