Although this lodge is down a long dirt road, it's anything but rustic. Eye-popping Mayan murals, by American painter Pamela Braun, adorn the inner walls of the main lodge, which also has a 25-foot indoor waterfall. Each room has air-conditioning and a theme—the Victorian Room has a country armoire and sheer curtains; the Pioneer Room has a pebble-lined shower and rough-hewn wooden bed. Surrounding all this are 215 acres of jungle containing 9 mi (15 km) of hiking trails, a butterfly farm, a zip-line canopy tour, and caves that you (and at times hundreds of day-trippers) can float through on an inner tube. Pros: One of the few jungle lodges with air-conditioning, lots of activities on-site including cave tubing, zip lining, and rock climbing. Cons: Can be busy with cruise ship groups.
