Green Hills Butterfly Ranch and Botanical Collections
Green Hills Butterfly Ranch and Botanical Collections Review
Green Hills is the largest and best of Belize's butterfly farms open to the public, with about 30 native species in a huge flight area on display at any given time. (Some 90 species have been raised at the farm.) Jan Meerman, who has published a book on Belize's butterflies and moths, runs the place with Dutch partner Tineke Boomsma and other staff. The staff speak English, Spanish, Dutch, Yucatec Maya, and Creole. On the 100-acre grounds also are many flowers, including passion flowers, bromeliads, heliconias, and orchids. Birding is good here as well. Bring lunch and eat it on the Green Hills picnic area. A cave, Pempem ("butterfly" in the Yucatec Maya language) is on the grounds but is not open to the public.
