Set in an arc on a 5-acre beachfront site, Grand Caribe's 72 super-luxury condos, in eight four-story, red-tiled-roof clusters, face the sea and a 500-foot stretch of sandy beach. Grand Caribe opened in 2008, with the most recent units completed in 2011; more are to come at a later phase. The one, two-, three-and four-bedroom suites have Brazilian floor tiles, kitchens with granite countertops and mahogany cabinets, and high-quality furnishings. Rare in Belize, some units

have elevator access. There are three pools, one with a swim-up bar and bar and grill serving light meals. Several good restaurants are within walking distance. The long pier has berths for a number of boats.

Grand Caribe Resort and Condominiums Review

Overall this resort was a disappointment.  On positive notes the grounds are immaculate.  The front desk and activities staff are very nice as are the restaurant staff.  The restaurant food is good and priced right.  No extra charge for room service was a nice change.  The negatives outweigh the positives though.  This is the first negative resort review I have ever written and I am doing so in hopes that others will not be as disappointed as

we were.  Firstly, this is by no means a couples/romantic resort.  It is packed with families with young children.  The little ones are screaming and crying all day long.  The teens are jumping and splashing in all the pools at once.  A fundamental problem with the resort is the building layout. Yes, all rooms get an ocean view but the "C" shape layout creates an echo chamber that sends every scream right up to your balcony.  I have posted videos to YouTube so you can experience this.  There are also only about six trees in the center of the buildings so the sound just bounces from one building to the next.  Its not a small issue.  The noise is relentless.  You can hear conversations 100 yards away.  Every time we went to a vacant pool the kids moved right in on us.  They gravitate towards the two side pools because they are deep and better for jumping as opposed to Ithe shallow center pool.  I asked management why a resort with four pools did not designate one as a "quiet/adult pool" and why the most private pool had no chairs or umbrellas near it.  This is the response I got. "We will be placing a small set of chairs on the north pool. This is supposed to be an adult only pool, however since we haven't put up signs as yet  indicating this (this is a new pool to our complex, only having been completed earlier this year), so in order to keep out both large groups and families we haven't placed anything there as yet. However, due to this, we will go ahead and place two lounge chairs for you to relax.". Not placing chairs keeps families and groups away?? Doesn't this also keep adult couples away??  No sign put up yet because the pool is new?? C'mon.  We were at least glad they placed chairs for us, two to be exact.  A family with children was quick to seize them even thought there was not enough chairs for them.  They just threw towels on the pool deck.  We tried to hide at the beach but the sea grass so typical to the area doesn't make for a pleasant ocean swim.  If you go past the dock a boat will decapitate you with extreme prejudice.  The other major issue is the room and maid staff.  By 8 AM max you are awoken by doors being slammed so repetitively that sleep is no longer an option.  The first day I threw the blanket back on the bed and the maids interpreted this as me making the bed and neglected it.  Towels were left exactly as I had left them.  No refold/replace, nothing.  This went on for days until I complained.  The tub jets didn't work but were repaired on request.  The shower drain is bent and has a sharp edge.  Not repaired, still like that when we left.  The kitchen is wonderfully stocked with first grade appliances yet all we really wanted was a 2Ooz. pool friendly cup to brink drinks downstairs.  I asked but this was the reply, " We as a resort, provide glassware.".  It's true, there were glass champagne flutes, wine glasses and 4 oz. juice glasses.  Nothing to drink water out of and nothing for the pool area.  No bar soap was provided at all until asked for.  You cannot use the washer/dryer because they insist on doing your laundry for you.  Which translates to all your clothes being washed on the same settings and being over dried on max heat for max time so the maid doesn't have to monitor the laundry.  By 5:30 one night it still wasn't complete and the maids come back and forth to your room when your there so they can get into the dryer.  Are you kidding me?  Just give people detergent so they can properly do there own laundry, at least the people who ask.  the maids don't wipe down the kitchen surfaces or balcony table.  The floors felt gritty and dirty the whole stay.  I wore socks one night to keep the grit off my feet and they turned black.  There is no mat next to the bed so the grit just follows you into the sheets.  So gross.  The lighting, at least in unit F8 is terrible.  All high wattage recessed lighting with no dimmers.  We had to use the ambient light from adjacent rooms instead of direct lighting because it was unbearably bright.  There was only one table lamp (in the br) but it had a 150 watt bulb so I threw colored T-shirts over it to subdue the harshness.  We ran out of facial tissue that was in a decorative tissue box holder and asked the maid for more.  She said "We don't provide that".  Really? You provide a decorative holder but I was supposed to bring my own box of tissues?  I reported this to management and got a new story, " We did run out of the facial tissue and unfortunately being so isolated we must import these items and they are on back order. Its the busiest time of year (second to Christmas) and unfortunately some items get left out due to this.". Wow, what happens when they run out of toilet paper being so isolated and all?  But then the "Great Tissue Shortage of 2012"suddenly ended and they appeared in my bathroom.  What luck!  On our last day I had our bags brought to the lobby and it was our intention to have breakfast and return to the room to get our valuables and wash up before checking out at 11.  While we were having breakfast our waitress said the front desk had just called her and informed her that we left belongings in our room.  I said "of course there are things in our room, we have not checked out yet.". After breakfast we went to retrieve our things and freshen up and found the aids had entered the room early and sent all of our things to the front desk prior to checkout time. WTF!?!?  Overall the responses I got from management were patronizing at best dismissive at worst.  There was no response to the last message I sent to the resort about my checkout so any subtle attempts to counter this review on this site should only be perceived as an attempt to save face with future customers not an attempt to satisfy me. The resort is far from town which is good because downtown is grungy (like the floors in our room) but bad because a bike ride to town on that road is rough and a golf cart costs as much a renting a Cadillac in New York.  The water taxi is often overloaded and bumpy as hell.  The Palapa bar was loaded with all he kids from our resort all sitting at the bar with us.  Ahi was close and pretty good.  The Lazy Croc is closed or out of business.  So this limits you being so far from town.
