Lamanai Outpost Lodge Review

Perched on a low hillside on the New River Lagoon, this eco-lodge's well-designed thatch cabañas sit amid lovely gardens and have porches with lagoon views. Two of the cabañas have air-conditioning. The Lamanai ruins (admission BZ$20) are within walking distance. There's a pricey, near all-inclusive plan with all meals, transfers, and activities, such as boat trips to catch and tag crocodiles, included, from BZ$1,016 double per night on a 4-night package. A room-only (EP) plan is also offered. The restaurant, Bushey's Place, serves excellent, filling meals. A dock extends 130 feet into the lagoon and is a good, safe place for swimming. Bird-watching, crocodile spotting, and also cultural tours, such as to meet Mennonite families (BZ$130 per person, including lunch), are offered. A jarring addition is the lodge's airboats, which break the stillness of the lagoon with the loud roar of airplane props.
