La Milpa Field Station Review

About 3 miles (5 km) from La Milpa Mayan site, this field station is a combination lodge and exotic summer camp. Stay in rustic thatch cabañas with private bath or in a dorm that sleeps 30. Since you're in a remote area, you'll likely want to eat all your meals, generally simple Belizean-style dishes such as rice and beans with stew chicken or pork, at the field station, although you can book a room without meals starting at around BZ$200. Nine hiking trails are maintained around the lodge, and guides are available to take you to La Milpa and other Mayan sites. In spring and summer you can visit archaeological teams working at La Milpa. You'll likely see lots of wildlife, including spider and howler monkeys, ocelots, peccaries, deer, and possibly even a jaguar.

    Jungle archaeology

Our first night in Belize was spent at La Milpa. The field station was in a lovely setting and the cabanas though rustic were perfect! Staff welcomed us and were most helpful. We enjoyed the food, flavors of Belize. We walked to the archaeological site in the jungle and were in awe when we saw the un-excavated structures. It was a great place to start a journey exploring Maya sites. The cost helps the conservation work and so that was an added reason to stay. The Humming Birds were incredible...sit on the deck of the restaurant and watch them....absolutely wonderful. We drove to La Milpa from Belize but relied on the advice and directions of Katie Valk, thanks Fodors for the recommendation! Driving is not for the fainthearted but was part of our adventure and we had no mishaps!
