By Air in Belize City

To & from Belize City

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) is near Ladyville, 9 mi (14 km) north of the city. The international airport is served by American, Continental, Delta, TACA, and US Airways. Atlantic Air has service three days a week to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, from Belize City, and Maya Island Air has daily service to and from San Pedro Sula via Savannah (near Independence, across the lagoon from Placencia). Twice-daily flights between Belize International and Flores, Guatemala, on both Maya Island Air and Tropic Air were discontinued in late 2007 because Belize did not meet certain safety oversight standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations affiliate, and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); attempts are being made to rectify this and restart service. There is no service to Mexico. Nonstop service from Europe has long been anticipated, but as of this writing nothing has been confirmed.

In addition to international flights, a domestic terminal at the International Airport has flights on Maya Island Air and Tropic Air to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker and the coastal towns of Dangriga, Placencia, and Punta Gorda. A Maya Island flight also stops at Savannah airstrip at Independence. The Belize City Municipal Airport, on the seafront about 1 mi (2 km) north of the city center, has domestic flights only; Maya Island Air and Tropic Air serve the same domestic destinations from here as from the international airport. However, fares from the municipal airport are about 10%-45% cheaper, depending on the destination, than similar flights departing from the international airport.

Taxis to town from the international airport cost BZ$50. Some hotels in and near Belize City also offer transfers from the airport, usually for around the same price as taxi fare. A few provide it for a little less than a cab. If you're renting a car, just walk out the main terminal across the small parking lot to the line of rental car offices.
