Thank goodness, the owner changed the name of this small hotel from Belize R Us to Black Orchid Resort. By any name, it brings a bit of refinement to howler-monkey watching. The resort perches at the edge of the Belize River, and you can launch a canoe, kayak, or powerboat from the hotel's dock, or just laze about the riverside swimming pool and thatch palapa. The air-conditioned rooms are large, with custom-made mahogany furnishings. A three-bedroom, two-bath house (BZ$545 nightly for up to six people) is a good choice for families; a guesthouse with shared bath (BZ$87 double) is for those on a budget. The on-site restaurant serves good Belizean food (dinner BZ$36). Pros: Most upscale lodging near Baboon Sanctuary, lovely riverside setting. Cons: Not directly in the Baboon Sanctuary.
