Established in 1973 by Jean Shaw, a pioneer in Belize tourism, the Hotel Mopan is well known for attracting interesting, well-traveled guests, including archaeologists, adventurers, and birders. The hotel is now run by Shaw's children, who have upgraded and renovated it while keeping the rates affordable. There's an Internet room, guest quarters are bright and clean, and the staff is always helpful. Pros: Interesting clientele, clean and well-run. Cons: Not a safe area to walk in after dark.
