It's hard to decide which is more satisfying: shopping in PV or feasting at its glorious restaurants. There's enough of both to keep a dedicated bon vivant busy for weeks. The highest concentration of shops and restaurants share the same prime real estate: Old Vallarta. After a day spent here, die-hard shoppers often need an extra suitcase for their Mexican ceramics, textiles, and beadwork; jewelry; clothes; and art. As construction of hotels, time-shares, condos, and private mansions marches implacably north up the bay, malls, specialty stores, and gourmet groceries follow. To the south, the Costalegre is made up primarily of modest seaside towns and self-contained luxury resorts; shopping opportunities are rare.
