$$$$, Barra de Navidad
Fodor's Review:
On a 1,200-acre peninsula between the Pacific and the Navidad Lagoon, this no-holds-barred resort cascades down to a private, though not terribly scenic, beach. An island unto itself, the lovely and rather snooty Grand Bay faces humble Barra de Navidad across the lagoon. Spanish arches, shady patios, cool fountains, and lush gardens contribute to the elegant architecture; tiered swimming pools are connected by slides and waterfalls. There's even a movie theater. If all this indulgence becomes too much, an inexpensive water taxi can take you over to the real world, two minutes away. There's a $15 per night service charge.
